Blow Over is a testimony to the necessity to create. It projects hope and a belief that art can in some way make life more meaningful and even more beautiful.

Finding refuge in the confines of her backyard during the COVID-19 pandemic, Mogul uses this time and the solace she found in the safety of her backyard to take a closer look at her immediate surroundings. While making an effort to stifle the news, chaos and discord of the world beyond her fence, these forces seep into her psyche and color the world that we see. 

Mogul’s experimental approach to her art is evident in her film work, where the process is just as important as the product. The hand built, rough hewn quality is an expression of honesty and respect for the materials being used. The imagery in Blow Over is constructed from the most rudimentary materials. Like a survivor on an abandoned island, she used scraps of paper, pencil, recycled packaging, and string to re-make her world. The resulting forms simultaneously represent, yet transcend their functional origin, imparting the sensation of things as they are perceived, rather than as they are known. The viewer is invited to participate in the seeing process. 

The classical view of the natural world as inspiration for art and the artist is celebrated here. And while the film makes clear that there are harrowing forces surrounding this moment of time, there is also a recognition that there have been looming crises before. In this film we sense an artist’s survivalist instinct, looking to nature to find a continuum. Though sadly transformed by human activity, the natural world still can provide opportunities to see beyond ourselves and the problems we have created.
