Landscapes
The landscape has been the inspiration for Mogul’s earliest work and has remained a focus throughout her career. As the state and fate of the planet is continually being challenged, her sense of appreciation and social responsibility has led her to address her concerns through plein-air sketches, polychrome wood reliefs and paintings. Idealism and sentimentality about the land is not what Mogul is after. Instead there is a sense of melancholy and concern. Through the materiality of her construction, use of recycled materials, and application of paint Mogul attempts to bring the viewer closer to her subject, and in doing so create an appreciation and awareness of the state of things.
The mountains, cliffs and rock formations that are part of the Southeastern Tennessee landscape have particularly occupied Mogul’s attention in her most recent drawings and reliefs. Her passion for hiking and rock climbing have brought her in close physical contact with nature from the ground level, while her interest in aerial and drone photography has added another perspective to her understanding of the terrain.
